Community Update: WPS Mill Levy Measure

The Westminster Public Schools Board of Education has approved a resolution placing a mill levy question before WPS voters.

The measure comes following changes in Colorado law that increased the amount of revenue school districts may collect through a mill levy override. WPS currently operates at the previous 25% limit. State law now allows districts to collect up to 27%, but WPS cannot access that additional revenue without voter authorization.

If approved by voters, WPS estimates that the additional two percentage points would generate approximately $2 million annually.

The additional resources would be focused on four priorities:
    1. Improving safety and security
    2. Expanding and strengthening Career and Technical Education
    3. Attracting and retaining effective teachers
    4. Improving academic achievement for all students

During the Board's consideration of the resolution, BOE Director Christine emphasized that placing the measure on the ballot does not make the decision on behalf of the community. Instead, it gives WPS voters the opportunity to make that decision.

“Tonight, we are not making that decision for our community. By approving this resolution, we are giving our voters the opportunity to decide whether WPS should be authorized to collect these previously approved revenues, without imposing new taxes. Ultimately, that decision belongs to our community.

The Board-approved measure will now go before WPS voters on the November 3rd ballot.
